Awards

DIPLOMA (minor, single subject)

The Diploma is awarded on the basis of successful completion of 30 ECTS credits. The Diploma is awarded on merit, at the following levels:

AWARD AGGREGATE
First Class Honours  70% on the aggregate
Second Class Honours – grade 1 60% on the aggregate
Second Class Honours – grade 2  50% on the aggregate
Pass      40% on the aggregate

Please note: to be awarded the Diploma, you must pass the required number of modules to a total of 30 credits.  Once you have passed all modules, the Diploma grade is decided on the basis of an aggregate score average of these module results combining 30% of the overall mark from Year 1 with 70% of the overall mark from Year 2 to give the award of honours.  Only modules where a credit (i.e. pass) has been obtained will go forward to the Diploma result.

BACHELOR AND DIPLOMA IN ARTS AWARD

The part-time Bachelor of Arts is a continuous degree programme which is organised into two Stages. Each Stage has prescribed Learning Outcomes and has an associated aggregate credit value (i.e. The Bachelor of Arts comprised of 180 ECTS has 90 ECTS for the Stage 1 (Diploma) cycle and a further 90 ECTS for the Stage 2 (Degree) cycle).

Progression

In order to proceed from the Diploma to the Degree Stage, students must accumulate the 90ECTS allocated to the Diploma by passing the examinations and assessments in the specified subjects.

Passing

The pass mark on all modules is 40%. Where different components of assessment (course work, laboratory work, continuous assessment, final assessment, etc.) within a module contribute to the final grade it shall not normally be a requirement that any one of these components be separately passed. Only an overall mark for the module will be returned. Marks will not be returned for components of a module.

A mark of ‘Incomplete’ must be returned to the Examinations Office where there is a requirement that an element(s) of a module be passed and that element(s) is not passed. A student is required to retake all elements of an incomplete module unless the College of Arts provides by regulation that students be exempt from retaking specific components. Candidates who do not pass their examinations outright are exempt from   further examination in those modules in which the pass mark of 40% has been attained.

Compensation Provision

Compensation provision does not apply for Part-time Undergraduate Degree Continuous programmes.

Capping of Examination Marks

Capping will apply in all cases, as outlined above, unless a deferral has been granted.

Honours for the Diploma in Arts are awarded based on the average marks received for completing 90ECTS over the Diploma Stage of the programme.   Where a student is exempt from one or more Diploma-level modules, the final marks for the remaining modules will be used to calculate the aggregate on which Honours are awarded.
