Diploma in Spanish

Course Overview

  • NEXT INTAKE: September 2016
  • MODE OF DELIVERY: One evening class per week

This course aims to equip students with essential communicative skills in Spanish, both spoken and written, and to introduce students to the history and cultures of Spain and Latin America.

The Diploma in Spanish will cover key areas of Spanish grammar. The teaching of grammar will be integrated with writing, reading and listening activities that will prepare the learner to deal with everyday communication, understand written information and correspond in written forms. There will be small-group, weekly classes dedicated to developing oral skills.

Who is the programme designed for?

The Diploma in Spanish is designed for those who have little or no previous knowledge of the language and wish to gain Spanish language skills for personal or professional reasons. However, if you have some prior knowledge of the language or a Leaving Certificate in the language you can apply for direct entry to the second year of the Diploma. Your level will be assessed by staff of the Spanish Department.

The Diploma in Spanish from NUI Galway will bring you to an A2 level in Spanish. This level is recognised by educational bodies and institutions all over the European Union. Should you wish to build on your proficiency to pursue further studies in Spanish, you will receive exemptions from modules up to this level. Spanish is currently the third most widely spoken language in the world after Mandarin and English. It is increasingly beneficial to those working in any sector with an international dimension.
